Eugénio de Andrade (biography)
His real name was José Fontinhas, he was born on 19 January of 1923, in Povoa de Atalaia, a small village in Beira Baixa, situated in Fundao near Castelo Branco, son of a family of peasants, people that worked the land. His childhood was spent near his mother, a figure that dominated his whole life and poetry. His father ,son of peasants with money, did not participate closely in his education.
He started school at the age of six in the village where he was born. A year later, he moved to Castelo Branco to live with his mother. In 1932, he moved again, this time to Lisbon, city where his father had settled for eleven years. In the meani´time he finished primary school. He continued to study and in 1935, he began to show interest in literature. He spent hours reading in a public library and started to write poetry.
In 1943 he moved to Coimbra, to where he returned after the military service. There he became acquinted with Miguel Torga and Eduardo Lourenço. He became a public servant in 1947, and spent thirtyfive years as an inspector for the health ministry.
One change of duty, made him move to Porto in 1950. He started living in a house that he left beind after four decades, when he moved to a Foundation Eugenio de Andrade building in Foz do Douro.
He abandoned the idea of taking a filosofy course and dedicated himself to writing and to poetry.
